About

Matthew Kohn has lived and breathed documentary since he filmed Vietnam Veterans protesting the first Iraq War as it was breaking out (1990). His first completed feature film was Call it Democracy (2004), which began as a response to 2000 Election and ended as an exploration of the faulty edges of all Presidential Elections. It also happens to be the first documentary feature film to use the internet to gather co-filmmakers to contribute footage. He made films in Ukraine, France and in the US. He then spent the better part of ten years, beginning in 2008, shooting in the middle of Sudan, at the border between many cultures. He also hosted Speakeasy Cinema, a secret screening series featuring some to the best filmmakers in NY's sharing a provocative work. He co-produced Charlie Victor Romeo, the first 3D feature at Sundance, and shot projects with Laurie Anderson, including her Academy shortlisted feature Heart of a Dog. In addition to his current screenwriting activities, in 2021, Kohn produced a screening of his silent films Sea Level Inferno and Water Border with a live band, and also directed Luxe Hotel, a 12 Hour performance piece with 25 Actors.
