Kristen Hwang is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and cinematographer based in Sacramento, Calif. She specializes in verité, allowing the emotional core of a character’s experience to drive the narrative. Kristen has spent many years as a beat reporter digging into stories of environmental and health inequities and social justice, and it is on those subjects where she most often turns her lens. Her reporting and filming is tenacious and humanizing. Kristen's master's thesis film, WHEN THEY’RE GONE, won the Student Academy Award gold medal for domestic documentary. WHEN THEY'RE GONE premiered at the San Diego International Film Festival and screened in dozens of festivals around the world. A prior film, FREED BUT FORGOTTEN, produced for USA TODAY, won an Edward R. Murrow.
