In southern Senegal, Daga Kande, a local leader in her community, is a passionate advocate for girls’ and women’s education. Denied the opportunity to complete her own education when she was a girl, Daga is now on a mission, with the support of Tostan, to ensure that children in her community can stay in school and have access to all the opportunities that she missed — and that they all have a right to have. This film is a product of the Solutions Storytelling Project.
Tostan is a nonprofit organization operating in rural resource-poor regions in five West African countries and partnering with organizations across Africa and around the world. Tostan’s mission is to empower communities to develop and achieve their vision for the future and inspire large-scale movements leading to dignity for all. Since 1991, Tostan has engaged with over 3,000 communities, reaching more than 5 million people in 9 countries through its empowering education program, based on human rights, that helps communities lead improvements in their well-being -- to improve health and education, reduce violence, and sustain change from within in partnership with local actors.
As a filmmaker, Fama is part of a burgeoning cinema scene in Dakar, Senegal. She believes in the power of the moving image as a tool to raise awareness and challenge our perceptions, and in the power of documentary to connect, heal, and elevate communities.
