Marlon Johnson

Marlon Johnson, a twelve-time Emmy award-winning producer and director from Miami, holds dual bachelor's degrees in Anthropology and Communications with a specialized focus on Motion Pictures from the University of Miami. Renowned for his award-winning documentaries exploring music, social, and cultural themes, Marlon's impactful work includes examining race-based gentrification in Coconut Grove and chronicling the rise of HIV infection in the Black-American South. Throughout his career, Marlon garnered accolades for his role as Head of Production and Senior Producer/Editor at Plum TV, earning eight regional Emmy nominations and winning his first Emmy for Local Arts and Entertainment Programming. His diverse portfolio includes co-directing the award-winning short "Sunday’s Best" and the feature-length documentary "Deep City: The Birth of the Miami Sound." In 2016, he received the South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. Marlon's latest ventures include directing "Symphony in D," awarded Best Documentary at the Regional Michigan Emmy Awards, and showcasing two 2020 feature documentaries: "Singular," a concert documentary honoring Jazz vocalist Cecile McLorin Salvant, and "River City Drumbeat," a New York Times Critic's Pick about the transformative power of the arts in an underserved community. It was later acquired by Amazon Prime. Recently commissioned by Independent Lens/ITVS, Marlon directed "Weight of the State," part of an investigative series on Kentucky's controversial felony laws, currently available on the Independent Lens digital platform. Marlon is currently the Deering McCormick Fellow at Deering Estate.
