About

Luz is a Venezuelan filmmaker based in New York. Since the age of six, when she received a Minolta from her father, Luz has been fascinated by the power of images. Her short film, Caracas Fenced (2012), received an Honorable Mention for cinematic quality at the Caracas Filminuto Festival. De Colores (2017) premiered at Doc NYC and was part of the official selections at film festivals in Los Angeles, Vail, and New Orleans. Luz has worked in the editorial departments of various projects, including the Academy Award-nominated The Martha Mitchell Effect (Netflix/Sundance Official Selection 22), Unfinished Business (Tribeca 22), The Business of Birth Control (Miami Film Festival 22), The Boy from Medellín (Amazon/TIFF 20), and the award-winning documentary Decade of Fire (PBS/Full Frame/DOC NYC19). She earned a BA in Audiovisual Communication from the Andres Bello Catholic University (UCAB) in Venezuela and later became the youngest and only female Technical Director in her country. Luz moved to New York after receiving a merit-based scholarship at The New School, where she completed two master's degrees in Documentary and Media. In 2018, Luz was awarded a Davis Projects for Peace to develop and implement a media literacy program for youth and kids, Petare Documenta in Caracas, Venezuela. She has also been a mentor for the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) Immigrant Artist Program for several years. Additionally, she was a fellow of the Karen Schmeer Film Editing Fellowship during 2022-2023. Luz works as an editor, finishing artist, and documentary director. Currently, she is working on her debut documentary feature, El Retorno/The Return, for which she received support from Fork Films and the NYC Women's Fund for Media, Music, and Theatre. Luz loves Legos, View-Masters, and dark chocolate.
