About

Kayla Tong, a director and cinematographer, was born and raised in Hong Kong and currently splits her time between New York and London. Drawing from her own experience of displacement and diaspora, she dedicates her craft on telling stories that that delve into these subjects. She is an alumna of the Asian Film Academy (in cinematography) and the Armed with a Camera program (in directing). Her work has been showcased at prestigious events such as the Busan International Film Festival, the New Orleans Film Festival, the LA Asian Pacific Film Festival, and the LA Shorts Fest, and has been featured in The New Yorker Documentary Series and KPBS. Her autobiographical film, Home is Where the Sunsets, which she wrote, directed, and shot, earned her the Best Director award at the Sacramento Asian Pacific Film Festival. Tong holds a B.A. from the USC School of Cinematic Arts and was the recipient of the European Union’s Erasmus Mundas Scholarship. She is currently working on her feature film debut, Home/Land, which has been selected to Docs by the Sea, EURODOC, and AIDC Cut to the Chase.
