About

Kavita is a multiple award-winning independent filmmaker based in Mumbai. She was nominated for the prestigious ‘Chicken & Egg Award’ (USA) in 2022. Kavita has thrice received the National Film Award for the trilogy of films celebrating the grit of people caught in the vortex of insurmountable circumstances. I cannot give you my forest (Rajat Kamal, Best Environment Film, 2015) Candles in the wind (Rajat Kamal, Special Mention, 2013) Cotton for my shroud (Rajat Kamal, Best Investigative Film, 2012) In 1996, she founded Top Quark Films with Nandan Saxena. Ears to the ground, they have produced socially-relevant and engaging films: cinéma-vérité with a dash of poetry, cinematic story-telling and a point-of-view. Their films have premiered at MAMI, Thessaloniki International Documentary Film Festival, London Investigative Film Week, MIFF and have won several awards. Kavita specialises in creative production, direction and script writing. She also does camera for her own films. Sometimes, she also works as a freelance creative producer. After her post-graduation in English Literature from Delhi University, Kavita worked as a journalist with ‘Indian Express’ for six years. After two years of reporting from the insurgency-torn north-east India, she gravitated towards the documentary. Besides producing films close to her heart, she has produced 17 films for United Nations Development Programme, and some for Canadian International Development Agency, IREDA, Ministry of Environment and several non-governmental organisations.
