About
Andrés Vázquez is a writer-director based in Los Angeles whose work explores themes of
intergenerational memory, spiritual mysticism, and the transformation of diasporic and detribalized narratives into intimate traditions and haunting mythologies. As the seventh son of migrants and a descendant of the Bracero Program and Mexican Repatriation, his storytelling searches for the beauty that can be found in darkness and embraces its ability to help us look deep within ourselves.
He is currently a contributing director and digital producer with Futuro Media, with whom he recently directed and produced pilot episodes of Waj Invades America, hosted by Wajahat Ali and in partnership with Warner Media 150. His films, Omolara and The Burning Plain were official selections of the Urban World Film Festival, Frieze Art Fair Los Angeles, the Bronze Lens Film Festival, and the HOLA Mexico Film Festival. Andrés’ film, The Burning Plain recently won Best Experimental Film at the Official Latino Film Festival.
Andrés was an ARRAY Liberated Territory Fellow (2021), a Film Independent Project Involve Directing Fellow (2020), and was awarded the Frieze LA Film Fellowship, presented by Deutsche Bank, Frieze, and Ghetto Film School in partnership with Endeavor Content (2021). His script, Despierta, won the Sundance Co//ab “Sound as Storytelling Challenge” presented by the Dolby Institute. His documentary FREQUENCIES received the Kintsugi Spirit Artist Grant from the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center (2021). Andrés was recently selected to participate in the Apichatpong Weerasethakul Creator Lab presented by Play Lab Films (2023), which will be held in Yucatan, Mexico.
