Sophia Abolfathi is an award-winning documentary filmmaker based in North Carolina. Across formats, her storytelling is marked by an intimate unveiling of our shared human histories, families, and memories.
In 2024, Abolfathi became a Suncoast Emmy Award winner for her documentary film, March of the Mangroves. She also earned a 2025 Hearst Journalism Award for her coverage of the endangered North Atlantic Right Whale.
Her independent documentaries have screened at film festivals in Los Angeles, Boston, and Florida, and won a Telly Award, a Communicator Award, and an AVA Digital Award. She is an alumna of the Gotham Film & Media Institute’s Career Development Program, and a member of the International Documentary Association and the Video Consortium.
