Chelsea Casabona is a documentary filmmaker and journalist currently based in Colorado Springs. She covers rural communities in southern Colorado — and the natural, cultural and political changes they are reckoning with — for Rocky Mountain PBS.

About

Chelsea's independent work as a co-director on the short documentary, METTLE, won her the “Best Student Work” award at the 2024 International Sport Film Festival, a 2024 Gary Corcoran Student Prize for Excellence in Reporting on Disability, and a 2025 Pulitzer Center Fellowship. Prior to working at RMPBS, Chelsea worked as a cinematographer and editor with the production A World of Difference: Embracing Neurodiversity, a series produced by Beacon College and available to stream on the PBS app. She graduated with honors from the documentary specialization at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.

Tarantulas bring the tourists to Colorado

In downtown La Junta, a rural town with a population of about 7,100 people, businesses painted their front windows with spiderwebs and adorned their buildings with super-sized tarantulas. The decorations came ahead of the town’s Tarantula Festival, an annual event that started in 2022 to celebrate the yearly mating season of thousands of tarantulas in southeastern Colorado.

Volunteers plant willow trees to stabilize river after dam removal

More than a dozen volunteers planted willow trees October 25 to stabilize a river bank outside of Eleven Mile Canyon. The project comes two years after a dam was removed from the river, which significantly lowered the amount of water, but also allowed trout to swim upstream, producing more quantity and diversity of offspring.
