About

Alex is a two-time Emmy-winning director and editor whose work combines narrative film style with documentary authenticity. His new series for HBO, NAVAJO POLICE: CLASS 57, came out in October 2023 with the New York Times calling it “superb and engrossing” and the LA Times describing it as “Inspiring and surprising... beautifully shot with an eye for wide landscape and small details.” The series is an immersive look at the Navajo Nation Police Department and modern reservation life. His most recent feature documentary, WILDLAND, premiered at the Camden Int’l Film Festival before playing theatrically in a dozen cities. The film was broadcast nationally on Independent Lens and was nominated for three Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Nature Documentary. Previously Alex produced and edited LOW & CLEAR which won the Audience Award at SXSW and played at True/False, HotDocs and IDFA. He also created the documentary web series SPARROW SONGS which landed him on Filmmaker Magazine’s list of The 25 New Faces of Independent Film and was showcased at Sundance, SXSW, and IDFA. Alex’s work centers on stories of people striving to transform themselves through bold and unconventional means. The resulting work offers authentic and intimate looks at how we choose to live our lives and what we value. Often these stories are set against an epic backdrop – a mountain on fire, the depths of the Pacific, the deserts of the southwest – but every piece is rooted in its characters. Through watching their journey we come away with a better understanding of our own. On the commercial side, Alex has created and overseen broad campaigns for a diverse client list including Filson, Patagonia, Chevrolet, KitchenAid, and Ram Trucks. In 2018, Alex was named the Sundance Institute | Discovery Impact fellow and in 2021, he was nominated for an ACE Award for Best Edited Documentary for his work on the STARZ Series, SEDUCED: Inside the NXIVM Cult. Alex began his career at 40 Acres and A Mule Filmworks, working closely under Spike Lee and Oscar-nominated Editor Barry Brown on multiple films including Inside Man.
