VC Jackson: SHIFT
Created by bech evans and SadĂ© Meeks, SHIFT is a community screening event dedicated to hyper-local stories that change how people see the places, people, and systems around them.Â
With community support and engagement, SHIFT has the potential to become an ongoing series with individual themes (SHIFT: Food Systems; SHIFT: Housing; SHIFT: Education).
The first SHIFT event will premiere two pilot episodes of a docu-series created by SadĂ© Meeks, a registered dietitian, writer, and founder of the nonprofit G.R.I.T.S. (Growing Resilience In The South).Â
Food as Resistance explores American history, Southern Black foodways, nutritional science, and Mississippi stories to reveal how Black foods are tools of resistance. The first half of the evening will feature 2-3 short (under 5 minute) films from youth and emerging filmmakers.
Providing an opportunity for an emerging filmmaker to see their own work in a traditional filmmaking format is central to SHIFT’s mission.
