About

Kay Hannahan is a filmmaker based in Minneapolis. Her films have been featured by The Atlantic and The U.S. National Gallery of Art and screened at film festivals around the world including Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, Docudays Human Rights Film Festival, and Ethnografilm. Kay holds an MFA in Film & Media Arts from Temple University and a BA in Anthropology from Concordia University Montreal. She was a 2018/2019 Fulbright filmmaking fellow in Hungary and served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Bulgaria. Kay enjoys almond croissants, news, and homemade Bulgarian brandy – in no particular order.

Altimir

Since the collapse of the communist regime in 1989, Bulgaria has experienced the most extreme population decline in the world. Low birth rates, high death rates, and emigration have pushed many villages to the verge of extinction. Altimir explores life in one of Bulgaria’s disappearing villages haunted by the promises of communism and capitalism.
