Helping students thrive as professional storytellers
At the Video Consortium, we understand that while academic programs in journalism and documentary provide invaluable foundational knowledge, students often lack the practical experience and direct industry connections needed to successfully transition into the workforce. Our University initiative addresses this gap by connecting them with established professionals to provide mentorship, industry insights, and real-world opportunities that equip them to thrive in today's ever-evolving media landscape.
Augmented by our vibrant local hubs and robust network of talented professionals, the University Initiative is all about connecting students in documentary film and video journalism — both in person and virtually — with the people, knowledge, and opportunities that can help kickstart their careers.
You bet. Students of participating Universities are eligible for a 50% discounted premium membership throughout the school year. Some universities cover membership fees for their participating students.
Absolutely. Eligible student members are studying or recent graduates of nonfiction storytelling or journalism. You must have a foundational production skillset, at least one sample of nonfiction video work to present, and a substantial record of their interest in pursuing a career in nonfiction visual media (through documentary/journalism classes, accreditation, etc).
Unfortunately not — you must already have a foundational skill set of journalism or a media practice, and be actively moving towards a professional media career. We unfortunately can only accept folks who're positive they'll enter this industry.
When you're just starting out (or about to start out) in the industry, it's hard to know where to begin, right? Well, we help you find your footing — through supportive community, mentorship, and connections that help you develop into the journalist, filmmaker, or storyteller you want to become.
We’re excited to hear from you. Please send a note to university@videoconsortium.org telling us about yourself, your program, and how you believe your students can benefit from this initiative. A team member will follow up with you shortly for one-on-one conversation and following steps.
For a successful program you'll need:
A faculty member who actively works with the students and is familiar with course offerings and curricula.
A group of three student leaders from different graduation years who'll work on programming and represent the larger student body
Based on the faculty member’s and the students’ input and help from VC, the University Initiative can work on a variety of programming activities like hosting guest speakers, organizing professional workshops, and participating in mentorship programs. The University Initiative can be tailored to the needs of your students and program, and we're excited to hear what you have in mind.
