About

María José (Majo) Calderón, is a Chilean editor based in Oakland, California. She has a degree in film directing from ARCIS University in Chile, and master's degree in journalism from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. With over 20 years of experience in the filmmaking field she has been fortunate to work and collaborate as producer and editor on a variety of film projects. Being an immigrant to the U.S., and a bilingual person (English/ Spanish) has made her especially valuable when working with stories that deal with the Latinx community in this country and on international stories across the Americas. She was producer/director/ editor of The Edge of the Sea, an award-winning environmental documentary for PBS; about communities fighting to save Puerto Ricos beaches from coastal development. In 2020 she edited Migrant Journeys: Why Do They Keep coming?, and episode for the PBS award winning online series, Global Mosaic. In 2021 she co-produced and edited "A Pescador in the town" an episode for the Latino Public Broadcasting series Latinos Are Essential. Her most recent project "Water for Life," a feature documentary she produced and edited premiered at the Mill Valley Film Festival (2023) where it received the Audience Favorite Award and the Best Feature Award at the Isla Verde International Environmental Film Festival (2024). The film is scheduled to air on PBS in 2025. Driven by her passion for human rights, environmental justice, and equity, Majo sees film as a powerful medium for positive social change. Her unwavering belief in the transformative power of storytelling underscores her dedication to creating a more just and compassionate society, one film at a time.
