About

Andrew Hida is a documentary director, editor, and cinematographer based in Los Angeles, CA. His work is recognizable by the intimacy in his storytelling that draws out the deeply personal and emotional complexities that make us human. Formal training in photojournalism shapes Hida’s approach to non-fiction storytelling, while his background in life sciences and conservation ecology inspires the projects he pursues. Hida has directed and produced multiple award-winning short documentaries that explore diverse themes. His 2017 short film, Im/Perfection, chronicles his father’s storied career as an architectural renderer during an era of technological transition, which premiered at the Hawaii International Film Festival. Hida’s 2012 short film, Follow My Steps, is about two disabled kids coming of age in an uncertain time, which premiered at DOCNYC. And his 2021 short film, UnBroken, that follows three youth adapting to motherhood, navigating out of gang violence, and living alongside emotional disabilities, was a 2021 SIMA finalist. Hida is in post-production on the feature documentary, POWER–the unapologetic and unforgiving story of the U.S. Power Soccer National Team. Following five athletes over two years to the 2023 World Cup, five teammates find limitless freedom in customized wheelchairs in the battle to win the World Cup. Off the court, they fight for their lives, for their athletic careers, and for equality in a world built for others.

Im/Perfection

Immigrating from Japan to Honolulu, Hawaii in 1961, Hitoshi Hida struggled to learn English as he excelled in math and painting during high school. Abandoning his desire to be an artist, Hida pursued a career in architecture. With the advent of three-dimensional renderings, Hida, 72, is one of only a handful of designers in Hawaii who still creates architectural renderings at a drafting table using color pencils, erasers, and rulers. Over the course of nearly 40 years, he has created thousands of hand-drawn architectural renderings, dedicating his life to the craft and pursuit of perfection.
