Stand up for Madinah (USA, 2024, 25 minutes) is a short documentary, which premiered on Al Jazeera English’s Witness. It follows Madinah Wilson-Anton — a Black Muslim woman and the first female Muslim legislator in Delaware — as she takes the House floor to call attention to the atrocities taking place in Gaza. A Democratic state representative who opposes U.S. support for Israel and is working to pass a Gaza ceasefire resolution, Wilson-Anton is also a local stand-up comedian.
After the screening, Philadelphia writer and content creator Whitney Roberts will moderate a conversation with filmmaker Zainab Sultan, an award-winning journalist. Sultan will share her creative process behind bringing Stand up for Madinah to life— how she worked with Wilson-Anton, and managed to bring Al Jazeera English’s Witness onboard as a partner. Light fare and drinks will be provided. Afterwards, we will gather at a nearby bar for drinks, conversation, and schmoozing.
